The investigation leads Masha and her department to Pavlovsk. She faces Buffet there who was looking for one of the statues in a local museum. During the pursuit he grabs Masha’s gun but doesn’t shoot her, instead calling her a daughter.
Masha learns that Buffet was a policeman before the war and that her parents and Buffet’s wife were evacuated on the same train. Later she gets to know that she is Maria Chebaturina, and that the Krapivins adopted her after her mother died.
