Record rainfall over Memorial Day Weekend continues to push lake levels to dangerous levels. Crystal Lake in Robbinsdale is now at a record high– 851.25 feet.
The abundance of water is causing inundation around the shoreline and pooling in low lying sections of street and backyards even some distance upstream from the lake.
Crystal doesn’t have a natural outlet. A pump in Sanborn Park drains Crystal Lake water into the storm sewer system across the Parkway in Minneapolis. The water then flows through the pipe system to Shingle Creek and eventually into the Mississippi River. The City is limited in how much water it can pump in order not to overload the Minneapolis system.
The Minnesota DNR is processing a permit request from the Robbinsdale to perform temporary additional pumping which will discharge lake water from Crystal Lake into the Twin Lake / Ryan Lake system and help bring the water level back under control. Officials say they will start pumping water as soon as they get the okay to do so.
Both Crystal Lake and Twin Lake have no wake restrictions due to high waters.
